Hi please advise me: I have a small vegetable garden and some veges grow well. But the carrots and beetroots I planted a while back have luxuriant leaves but small roots. My better half says my soil is too rich. What do you think?

Hi Gail – your ‘better half’ is half right! It sounds like your soil is too rich in nitrogen which is resulting in leafy growth and not enough root growth. Try incorporating some bone meal before planting and then feeding with an organic, slow release 2:3:2 fertiliser, when the seedlings are small. This will add phosphorous which encourages root growth.
