And winter is officially here

Posted in Garden Diary by Jane Griffiths on the June 24th, 2009

We celebrated the winter solstice with gluwein – seemed more appropriate than chilly champagne. It is both the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter. The main reason we were celebrating the solstice is because from here on the days will now start getting longer – yaaay. I still haven’t had frost yet and everything is green – but zero is predicted over the next few days so the nasturtiums will probably be black soon. My cauliflowers are forming heads so winter cauliflower soup is coming up soon to warm those chilly nights.

Said a sad farewell to the big old fig tree yesterday. It has been here since I moved into this garden in 1992. It has become too unruly in its small space and blocks precious sun. I am replacing it with a selection of citrus trees. It always saddens me to take a tree down, even when it becomes necessary.
